World Vision in Aklan

Local media practitioners of Kalibo had the opportunity of meeting two of the young people who benefited from the World Vision’s Program through Abante Aklan. They were accompanied by two ambassadors of World Vision, known personalities in the show business, the former Bb. Pilipinas, Ms. Miriam Quiambao and MissTippy dos Santos, to endorse the noble endeavour of World Vision.

What is World Vision? It is a relief development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities worldwide to help them reach their potential by addressing the issues of poverty and injustice.

World Vision believes that poor communities should not be given ‘ hand outs’ but instead should be given ‘a hand up.’The organization does not provide donations to poor families, but instead offers opportunities for them to become self supporting in the long term.

Today, World Vision and Abante Aklan’s work involves 64 barangays in six municipalities of Aklan, helping over 5,500 families and approximately 7,000 children. Amongst its assisted municipalities are Altavas, Batan, Madalag, Malinao, Nabas and Tangalan.

World Vision has provided parents with training and opportunities consistent with the main sources of livelihood and employment in the province to augment their family’s income so that they might become useful members of the community.

World Vision’s efforts are focussed upon expanding the market for local handicrafts from which many families earn their living, helping more children to complete their schooling with the help of institutions willing to provide college scholarships, and upon providing graduates with employment opportunities within the province to allow them to become self sustaining individuals.

World Vision today, through the assistance of the local organization in the province, Abante Aklan Inc. continues to seek the support of other organizations, business groups, churches and schools to help its community development work in the province./TE
