Outrage in Afghanistan
Following the burning of a copy of the Koran by Pastors Terry Jones, a radical Florida preacher in the United States, there have been demonstrators all over Afghanistan which culminated in the storming of a UN compound in the town of Mazar E Sharif by angry Afghanis who consider this to be a sacrilegious act and an insult to Islam.
Twelve people were killed in the protest and the compound was set on fire. Some protestors were amongst the dead together with seven UN employees. The incident has generated wide concern about the impact this will have on Muslim around the world./TE Unrest in the Middle East
Unrest continues in the Middle East with many people taking to the streets in protest against high unemployment, escalating food prices, a lack of democratic process, and oppressive regimes.
There have been big protests in Yemen where some factions of the army together with a number of generals have sided with the protestors. In Tunisia tear gas been used against demonstrators whilst in Bahrain more Saudi troops have been brought in to quell the unrest. In Libya the battles still rages between factions still loyal to Colonel Gaddafi and those who are demanding change.
Aden and Syria are amongst the latest countries to experience unrest. In Syria more than seventy five demonstrators have been killed in the last two weeks, some by snipers positioned on roofs and some by plain clothed security agents. Twelve hundred people have been arrested./TE
