Following the nuclear emergency which was recently declared in Japan, concerns have been raised about the proposed nuclear reactor scheduled for construction in Indonesia.
Like Japan, Indonesia is located on the ‘Ring of Fire’ which defines the Pacific Plate, and as such is also subject to earthquakes, to volcanic eruptions, and to tsunamis. Two test reactors have already been built with preparations now under way to build the main reactor unit.
This has enormous implications for the Philippines which lies directly in the path of the prevailing North Easterly winds. Should a similar accident occur within the proposed Indonesian plant, it would be the Philippines which would be subjected to the bulk of the radioactive fallout. Lives would be lost as a consequences, and crops and livestock would be decimated./TE
