THE VALUE OF MONEY By: Megs Lunn Lately, the unpredictable weather has hampered many of our scheduled activities for the day, however, it did not discouraged us to find ways to be able to make our day productive.
Together with some members of Koolearth, Inc., (the Aklan Environmental Advocates Group), we went to see the father of the town of Libacao for some very important inquiries. Welcoming us with a smile is Municipal town Mayor Charito Navarosa and his executive assistant, Mr. Alex Dionela.
I say earlier productive, and its worth mentioning because we did not only get answers to our query, but more so, we were surprised and amazed of the on-going development in this town. If you remember almost 4 years ago – Typhoon Frank damaged more than 50-houses along the river banks of this town, not to mention the full-ranged damaged it did in the whole of Aklan and its neighboring provinces, too.
Libacaonons surely knows the value and worth of money. We came to a conclusion, therefore, that the town’s mayor is a man of vision and action. He has and is continually fulfilling his promises to his constituents. The people around and behind him are also very willing to help make this things happen, to benefit the whole of Libacao, and in this case, also the towns that will be affected downstream rivers including, Banga, Madalag, Malinao, Kalibo and Numancia. This is the almost 2-kilometer river flood control project that costs a whopping Php93M. When I say, they know the value of money, is because, they have shown the people a tangible project that is socially acceptable, environmentally-responsible and has a bigger impact in answer to what happened during typhoon frank. This is contradicting to what we can’t see about the P100M Dredging project in the town of Kalibo.
The town of Libacao as envisioned by the good mayor and his people will be the last frontier of the province. Right now, everybody is focused in the island of Boracay, they call – THE JEWEL of Aklan. However, we will not forget that this beloved province has more to it than meets the eye. We should know how to discover potential tourism sights and more importantly, to help each other makes this province well known, not only because of Boracay. The last frontier, because, it has vast land with virgin forests and more or less 60 waterfalls and even X10 bigger than the island of Boracay. They offer more exciting tourism activities like wild river rafting and high mountain ranges and other adventures more than we can’t imagine.
It has more potentials than we could think of. Libacao forest’s areas in fact, served as the main watershed of the Aklan River and is said to be only remaining forest cover in the island of Panay. The LGU Libacao needs more help in promoting this promising vast land that offers God’s given nature that the locals of Libacao would like to protect as well and will not even tolerate what happened in the island of Boracay, of which now is out of control. We can no longer get back the old Boracay because of its huge development that is affecting its natural beauty compared to when I first came to visit the island in the 80’s. You should know what I mean here.
