Refusing to Engage

Rapist, stalkers, and other assailants, often engage their victims with non threatening behaviour before attacking. They throw out a verbal ‘rope’ and hope you grab it. They might attempt to get personal information from you. Refuse to reveal personal information to strangers, and put the brakes on conversations that make you uncomfortable, defensive or upset.

• Refusing to engage in conversation with strangers can help keep you safe. You are not required to respond to anyone’s overtures.

• Ignore the conversation. Walk away or pick up a book or magazine to signal that you are otherwise occupied.

• If a conversation with someone you know is getting too heated, simply disengage and say you will continue the discussion some other time.

• Do not allow others to push your buttons. Do not respond even if they say provocative things like, “You do not care about the homeless,” or are you a racist?”

Advice: Practice refusing to engage with a friend. Have them push your buttons by making provocative statements like “Oh you are so stupid.” Or why did you say such lies?”

Points to Ponder

Pride comes from an achievement that does not depend on others’ approval. It is the hard earned approval we grant ourselves. It prods us to distance ourselves from the herd. Today however the word has been so debased that it is used to describe people whose only distinction is that they are part of the herd. People claimed they are “proud” because they are gay, black, female,, white, whatever, all of which are accidents of nature. Real pride makes us distinctive, even if only in our mind’s eye.
