Rural Bank of Malinao supports Municipal Fiesta

The municipality of Malinao came into being in the year 1796, with Don Casimiro Barrera as its first gobernadorcillo. Little written history is known of Malinao in its early existence, except for church records on baptismal rites which started on the year 1796, the same year Malinao was recognized town. By the close of the 19th century, the political, economic and even the physical structure of Malinao conformed to the classical colonial and feudal set-up existing throughout Christian Philippines. The layout of the Poblacion followed the classical Spanish town plan; which is placing the church facing the municipio with the plaza in between and streets laid out in grid pattern. The principalia partook of choice residential lots around the plaza. Their importance and influence reflected in the proximity of their lots to the center of power. The Spanish decree to change family names for easy identification of inhabitants led to the assignment of the initial letter ‘Y’/ ‘I’ for families originating from Malinao, leading to such popular family names such as Icamina, Ysalacan, Igharas, Ilio and so on.

This year, the Municipality of Malinao celebrated the feast of St. Joseph the Worker on April 30 to May 1, 2011. The fiesta is the time for celebration and thanks giving for the bounty that abounds in the province of Malinao. It is a celebration for the good harvest, a homecoming for Malinaonons in the diaspora, and recognition of talents and accomplishments of local citizens. This joint annual undertaking of the Municipal Government and the Church is to give honor to God and our devotion to the Patron Saint Joseph the Worker. A tribute inspired by the heroes of the “El Levantamiento de los 82 de Lilo-an”, and the heroes of World War II who have shaped the generation of heroes and leaders of Malinao, will be shown on the festival, shown to serve as the inspiration and motivating force in the efforts of the Malinaonons to maintain peace and prosperity.
