Powerful Strategies for Staying Safe/ Planning and Setting Boundaries

Staying alert and mentally prepared helps you handle threats. When you are confronted by a threat you may panic, feel fearful, or become angry. None of these emotions will help you to decide what you will do next. Clearing your mind will help you focus on doing what needs to be done.

• Stop whatever else you are doing and focus on the threat.
• Take a deep breath and push all unproductive thoughts, fear, anger, and doubt, out of your mind.
• Assess the situation and decide what needs to be done.
• Look at the attacker’s eyes while deciding your best option of escape or attack if necessary.
• Clearing your mind also requires steering clear of alcohol or drugs. You cannot make good decision if your thinking is not clear.

Advisory: In every day stressful situation, take a moment to clear your mind of fear, doubt and anger. Take a deep breath and focus your attention on the situation at hand. By taking deep breaths you are not only clearing your mind, it will help you to be mentally prepared when you face a serious threat./TE
