“This Was”
Jethro Tull started out as a blues based rock band and recorded this their first album in the late sixties. Their style is quite unique, due largely to the inspirational and innovative flute playing of Ian Anderson, the band’s leader, who was also famed for assuming the unusual posture of standing on one leg whenever he played flute.
The album ‘This Was’ is well put together and includes some excellent drum work by drummer Clive Bunker, with Mick Abrahams on nine string guitar and Glenn Cornick on base.
The album kicks off with ‘My Sunday Feeling’, a haunting account of the morning after the night before. I guess that most of us have probably been there! This definitive number sets the pace for the tracks which follow, each of which is exceptional in its own way.
These tracks include songs such as ‘Some Day the Sun Won’t Shine For You’, ‘Move On Alone’, ‘Dharma for One’, and others. This is a truly enjoyable album with a most definitive style, and as such an album which can be played over and over again. /TE
