KALIBO, Aklan – A bridge that will connect most towns in the eastern side of Aklan to Madalag, an interior and hinterland municipality in the province, is nearing completion and is seen to make travel and delivery of farm produce faster and easier.
In his regular report to the people aired over a local radio staion here, Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez revealed that the steel component to complete the Guadalupe Bridge connecting Barangay Dagitan to Poblacion Madalag, Aklan is already complete for delivery to the project site.
Barangay Dagitan belongs to Madalag located in between the towns of Banga and Libacao and situated at the other side of Aklan River.
Marquez said the bridge’s steel superstructure is being provided by the national government under the President’s Bridge Program through the efforts of KASANGGA party list Rep. Teodorico T. Haresco.
Haresco, an Aklanon, headed the President’s Bridge Program before becoming a party list representative.
The steel components were brought all the way from Palo, Leyte and Governor Marquez expressed optimism that the much-needed infrastructure will be finished by December, in time for the municipal fiesta of Madalag town whose patron saint is Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Composed of 4 spans estimated to be around 200 meters long, Governor Marquez said once completed, the Guadalupe Bridge will be one of the longest bridges in Aklan.
From Dagitan, the bridge will lead straight to Madalag Municipal Market, which will shorten travel time to thirty minutes.
Presently, Madalag town proper could only be reached by going across the Aklan River through a manually maneuvered boat or a bamboo raft, or by taking a bus or jeepney from Kalibo that passes three more towns to get there. (PIA)/TE
