(Continuation. from the last issue...)
We should appreciate the fact that our job is an opportunity, and not just an obligation. Aklanons should be proud to be Aklanons, and not have the colonialist mindset simply because we may be married to a foreigner. Our leaders should consider Aklan as a whole, and notgive praise to Boracay only. We still have so much to be proud of in Aklan.
It is our leaders who should be the ambassadors of the Aklanon’s goodwill . Although it may not surprise you, some of our leaders invariably direct their guests to Boracay. In their eyes they think that this is the best thing to do, and so ordinary Aklanons also do the same. It would seem that their minds are becoming colonialist, too. Where then has the so called ‘love your own’ value go to?
We have so much to be proud of in Aklan. There is so much more than what the eye can see. Teachers should instill in the minds of the students that there is more to Aklan and Aklanons than one might think. Firstly, we should love and patronize our own products. Secondly, we should be proud of our heritage and of the Aklanon’s ingenuity. Finally we should tell our tourists about all these qualities and attractions, and we should feel proud to do so.
As fellow Aklanons, are you yourself proud of Aklan and of being an Aklanon? We should all know our town and our province well, and we should feel proud about it too. What is the point of being globally competitive if we are not locally competitive in the first place?
As usual, Jose Rizal’s wisdom still resonates today, when he said, “HUWAG MAGING DAYUHAN SA SARILING BAYAN.”/TE
