Food Security

What would happen if the world was to run out of food? What if there was not enough food to go around? What would we do if some countries had enough food whilst others had none?

You may consider this to be an unlikely scenario, but with climate change and an ever expanding world population, experts around the world are becoming increasingly concerned about the possibility of such a scenario becoming a reality.

If your neighbor has a car and you do not then you may not like it, but it is not likely to affect your life to a significant degree.If however your neighbor has food to feed his family and you do not, the equation changes.

At present we are all able to eat food, provided that we have enough money with which to buy it. But what if we had the money but there was no food to buy? There would not only be widespread hunger with thousands dying from starvation every day, but this would be accompanied by a breakdown of law and order as people became more and more desperate.

Governments would not only have to take extreme measures to protect their borders in the ‘food wars’ that would inevitably ensue, but they would also need to protect their own people from each other.

In recent years the world has seen violent rioting in a number of countries around the world as a result of rising food prices, with one government being overthrown as a consequence of this. Is this a taste of what is to come?

For our own sake, for the sake of our children, and for the sake of succeeding generations, we all need to become more aware of the issues which affect food security. Likewise we all need to do what we can to ensure that such a situation will never arise./TE
