ILOILO CITY– Some 346 children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Western Visayas are set to take the competitive examinations for the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Regional Welfare Office 6 (RWO 6) director Samuel S. Madrid said that the scholarship is open to fourth year high school dependents of OFWs who at the same time are OWWA members.
The 346 applicants from this region will compete with thousands of hopefuls from 16 other regions nationwide to be part of the 150 slots for college scholarship starting school year 2010-2011.
If they qualify they are entitled to a maximum of P60, 000 financial assistance annually inclusive of all related expenses for them to pursue a four to five-year baccalaureate course.
Other expenses exceeding the allotted fund will be shouldered by the parents but should school expenses be lesser than the amount provided for by the program the remaining money will be given to the scholar, he explained.
To maintain the scholarship a scholar must at least have an average of 85 percent.
“We encourage them to take science and technology-related courses,” Madrid said.
At present Western Visayas has 35 EDSP scholars.
The exam is slated Nov 21 in various testing centers identified in every province of Western Visayas. (PNA)/TE
