A CD Review HAKOS

If one takes a listen to the current onslaught of RnB stuff, remakes and cover versions now lording the airwaves, Armor’s brand of music comes as a whiff of fresh air.

Dubbed as a “musical activist” by News Today’s editor Kathy Villalon, Armor’s songs evoke ethereal themes that reflect serenity. And because he draws inspiration from a plethora of current situations, his pieces can stir varied emotions from its listeners. Not really surprising for someone who thinks out of the box.

In a recent interview, Armor portray his latest offering as a merging of sound and poetry, as in light and darkness, yin and yang, a knitting to produce contemporary Visayan music,” describes Armor of his latest project.

A cut above the rest, HAKOS (Hiligaynon term for embrace) promises a unique musical experience. It is packed with soulful renditions of the enchanting Patungo sa Buwan” and the haunting “Oh Ilaw.” These materials have something genuine to offer for Armor manages to show off his myriad musical influences (including electronic) that makes his sound unique and peerless.

Remarkably solid, video enthusiasts must take notice and watch Armor’s video version of the enigmatic “Alaala” showing the surreal Tigayon Hill wherein the nearby Aklan River’s pristine waters and environs evokes memories of cleansing one’s spiritual being.

Not to be outdone, the MTV-like version of “Oh Ilaw” brings back fond memories as it feature some of Kalibo’s laidback and rustic scenes. One that makes these raw footages impressive is that these were taken with a simple cell phone camera.

Nostalgic like the rest of his compositions, “Magkatulad,” “Kagab-ihon,” and “Bitoon sa Langit” are wonderfully crafted, deep and so focused that you may wonder where they all come from. Now this is what you call ‘muzak’ raised in art form. Fresh and currently relevant.

Armor’s recent output aptly titled HAKOS nonetheless interpret an articulate the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity. For sure, it will leave a lasting impact even to the most discriminating listener.
