Hunger Strike in India
Seventy four year old Anna Hazzare, a human rights activist in India and follower of Mahatma Ghandi, was recently sentenced to one week in prison for declaring that he would go on a hunger strike until death in protest at legislation recently passed by India’s government.
Indian people have become increasingly frustrated by the rampant corruption currently prevailing at all levels of Indian society. A bill was recently introduced into law in a bid to finally eliminate this scourge. The government has been tarnished by numerous scandals in recent years, and Anna Hazzare and many others felt that the bill did not go far enough to combat corruption at the highest level.
Fearing that his declaration would lead to social unrest, he was arrested together with a thousand of his supporters. Such was the outrage at this blatant abuse of his human rights that people throughout India came out onto the streets in protest.TE
