Why Do We Need To Donate Blood?
There are some qualifications needed to be a blood donor. Examples are one is of good health and should be 16-65 years old. Sixteen to seventeen-year-olds needs parental consent and have at least 45 kgs in weight equivalent to 100 lbs. blood pressure ranging from 90-160/60-100 mmHg with a hemoglobin level of 125-170 gm/dL.and most importantly must pass the physical and health history assessments.
Persons who can not donate blood are those sufferrring from Diabetes, hypethyrodism, cardiovascular disease, severe psychiatric disease, epilepsy, seizures disorders, cancer patients, severe bronchitis and other lung diseases like tuberculosis, AIDS, STD (past or present), malaria, kidney and liver disease, prolonged bleeding, and persons using prohibited drugs.
The day before the blood donation the blood donor must have enough rest and sleep, no medications and alcohol intake within 24 hours prior to blood donation. Have something to eat prior to blood donation but avoid fatty foods and drink plenty of fluid like water or juice.
Steps in donating blood: 1.have your weight taken 2. register honestly & complete the donor registration form 3.have your blood type & hemoglobin checked. 4. A physician will examine the blood donor, 5. actual donation. The amount of blood to be donated will depend on the donor’s weight & blood pressure. Either 350 cc or 450 cc & would usually take 10 minutes or less, 6. a 5-10 minute rest & plenty of fluid intake is necessary after donation.
Screening of blood donors include temperature taking, temperature not more than 37 degree Celsius, heart rate of 50-100 beats per minute, BP= 90/60 – 160/100 mmHg and hemoglobin level of 125-170 gm/dL.
Blood collection may take 5-10 mins. Each blood donor may donate 250-450 ml. The body replenished with the donated blood quickly within 3-5 hours. A regular blood donor may donate every 3 months, without harmful effects in the body. No special foods after donation just drink water or juice, rest for a few minutes before getting up and take a snack. Resume activities immediately unless your jobs needs you to be fully alert, so resume at least after 6 hours.
After blood donation a donor must have a snack, refrain from stooping down to avoid dizziness. Refrain from strenuous activities like: lifting heavy objects, driving big vehicles such as bus, trucks & etc. Avoid using the punctured arm in lifting heavy objects. Apply pressure on the punctured area and lift the arm in case the area is still bleeding. If there is discoloration and swelling on the punctured area, you may apply cold compress for 24 hours and then hot compress for the next 24 hours. If there is dizziness, just lie down, feet elevated. Drink plenty of juice, in just a few minutes or so the dizziness will pass./TE
