KALIBO, Aklan — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) here has started training its sight on students enrolled in various public and private institutions to help in the bank’s campaign on coin re-circulation.
According to Leonora S. Templonuevo, Deputy Director of BSP-Kalibo, they have started going around Aklan schools in June of this year to conduct information campaigns on coin recirculation.
Templonuevo said that they also disseminated information on the New Generation Currency (NGC) and its security features and designs.
“We decided to go to the level of pupils and students to emphasize the importance of coins, and to remind them to circulate or recirculate them,” Templonuevo said.
Templonuevo also said that they found school pupils to be very attentive to their lectures on coin circulation.
BSP-Kalibo targets to cover more schools to conduct the same activity. At the same time, they are also encouraging other entities or establishments to contact the BSP if they want the same activity to be conducted in their offices.
Circulating or recirculating coins that are usually just kept in homes will prevent higher prices of goods, said Templonuevo.
“When we buy goods and we were not given the right change because of insufficient coins, it means we bought the items at higher prices. This means adding to inflation,” Templonuevo said.
Templonuevo also stressed that coins must be circulated because it is more expensive for the government to manufacture coins than bank notes.(PIA)/TE
