Together We Can Make a Difference

And so we come to the sensitive issue of corruption, which is perhaps – and I know that many of you will agree– one of the most pressing issues confronting our society today. In order for our country to move forward and develop its full potential, it is imperative that this issue of corruption be addressed.

Should we fail to do so, the Philippines will forever remain a third world country, and as the economic screw tightens, increasing numbers of our people will go hungry.

Are we as a nation to become like a beggar who depends upon the charity of others? Is this the future that we choose? Or would we rather determine our own destiny and move forward onto the world stage to become a prosperous and self reliant nation, a nation which sets the standard for other countries within the region? If so then there is a work to be done.

Many of you will have read in the Bible how Cain killed Abel. Did you know that both of these names have meaning? Cain means ‘possessions’ whilst Abel means ‘breath of life’, and on the streets of our towns and cities, and in our halls and offices, I see Cain killing Abel every day.

How does corruption arise other than through personal greed and a complete disregarded for the welfare of others? We all know that corruption goes on, but what can we do about it? For so endemic has it become within our society that we have somehow come to accept it as inevitable, and as such a way of life.

In the meanwhile the weak endure intimidation and deprivation whilst the wicked and selfish grow strong. It does not have to be like this.

We have all seen the media reports about corrupt politicians, and we are all well aware that this goes on at the highest levels, but where does it begin? The answer is right here at home. Because corrupt practices begin at the very lowest level, and if we allow them to remain unchecked they will spread like a cancer to permeate our whole society.

It might be an uncomfortable truth, but if we are going to tackle corruption and improve our society then we need to start in our own back yard. What can we as individuals do? We can take a stand! Because by turning a blind eye, by simple doing nothing, we too become instrumental in helping corruption to spread.

Corrupt individuals and corrupt practices need to be exposed. We all have a part to play, and together we can make a difference. But we need to start now!/TE
