Roy Rogers‘Slide Zone’
Roy Rogers is a white American blues artist who recentlycame to prominence through his association with the late John Lee Hooker with whom he played as a backing musician.
His origins lay in ‘ Country and Western’ music, but since those early days he has evolved into a competent and innovative blues musician with a special aptitude for playing ‘slide’ guitar. To watch this man in action is a real joy, and his back hand technique using his knuckles to slide down the frets of the guitar to the bridge enables him to achieve some exquisitely high notes. As such his unique style defies belief.
Tracks one and two, ‘Get Back in Line’ and ‘Spent Money’ both employ this powerful slide technique, as does ‘Looking Up at the Downside’ another lively and powerful track. Another number featured on this album is ‘Not Fade Away’, originally composed and recorded by the Rolling Stones as a tribute to the late great Bo Didley, as is evidenced by the unmistakable Bo Didley beat.
Other tracks feature Roy Rogers playing long arm banjo, further demonstrating his musical versatility and his accomplishment as a musician. This is a well put together album which you will most certainly enjoy, and I for one intend to follow the unfolding career of this up and coming blues artist with acute interest./TE
